How do I know if I am eligible for this scholarship?

You are eligible if you meet the following:

  • Reside in Gosper County for at least one year.  It does not matter which area High School you attend and no preference will be given to any school.
  • Maintain a B Average or Better.
  • Choose a college major that is a helping profession (Law Enforcement, Human Services, Emergency Management, Medical Professions, Social Work, Teaching)  Preference will be given to Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice and Emergency Management majors.
  • Show financial need.
 

Who chooses this scholarship award?

Members of the Hemmingsen family formed a committee to choose the winner each year.  The members chosen usually don't live in the area and are not familar with any individual student from any particular high school, so they are picking a winner based on the information on the scholarship form, not a preference for any school or individual.

When did this scholarship start?

The first award was given in 2010 to Kaitlyn Bullis at Elwood High School.

Is it true that family members are given preference for this scholarship?

Yes, Al's grandchilden that are still in high school are usually given preference from the family.  As is the case with any scholarship given out by a private family.

Who funds the scholarship?

The scholarship is funded completely by private donations from members of the Hemmingsen family.
